I hate to say this because I like Navritilova, but I think the time during which she won all of those titles was perhaps a building phase for the sport.  Have you watched some of those matches?  They are so SLOW.  The ball is moving so slow that anyone could have time to set up to hit them.  I know she  has a lot of titles and mutliple Grand Slam titles, but come on.  Tennis was more of a sport for women in garden clubs at that time, and you can see it in the number of titles that players like, Margaret Court, Everett, and Martina.  i wish this wasn't the case.

I do not count anything before Steffi Graff.  Her arrival really marks the time when women's tennis really became the real deal.  So in tennis there is BS (before steffi), and AS (after Steffi).  Before Steffi you have your Traci Austins, Margaret Courts, Chris Everetts, and Navratilovas.  All are great players for their time, but you have to put them in correct context.

I agree and disagree. The game was slow back then. The rackets we used didn't have any power and the ball was much heavier. Federer uses a small racket size and it is still twice as large as the old rackets. Back then the players had to work a point, always thinking. This is what made Martina and Borg so great.

Steffi changed the game of womens tennis by using the technology to its best advantage (Power). Nick Bolleteri was a major influence in the power game, don't think just hit it as hard as you can. It wasn't until age slowed him down that Andre started to play tennis.

this is unrelated to the previous message, but i just wanted to say that martina talks too too too much during the tennis coverage. it is rather distracting and filled with her opinions; it is obvious who she likes and dislikes. could you please scale back on the remarks so we can enjoy the matches.

sincerely,
a lover of the game

Trying to compare "Then and Now" for me is very difficult. Whether it be tennis, golf, baseball or soccer, the conditions, equipment used and training has undergone great change. In tennis, Martina was great in her era, but I agree that as an announcer she is, at best, bias and demonstrates that in her commentary constantly. Whenever she is on, it's the mute button for me!
